These papers include correspondence, diaries, writings and miscelleneous material which documents James Mellon's youth and education through his early 20s. There are letters between him and other family members while at college and during his brother George's illness. The writings are a seventeen page reminiscence of the East Liberty Presbyterian Church (1850-1870) that he wrote in 1932.

James R. Mellon (1846-1934) was one on eight children of Judge Thomas Mellon (1813-1908) who has the founder of Mellon Bank and patriarch of the Mellon family in Pittsburgh (Pa.).
